History

ATBAP logoThe OML-Muay Thai International was formed in the Philippines by three-time South East Asian (SEA) Games Bronze Medalist Orlando M. Lapuz. OML-Muay Thai International is a SEC-registered, non-profit organization dedicated to spreading the sport of Muay Thai all over the Philippines. In 1995, the name OML-Muay Thai International was changed to the Amateur Thai Boxing Association of the Philippines - Muay Thai International (ATBAP-MTI). In that same year, the International Federation of Muay Thai-Amateur (IFMA), the official governing body of International Amateur Muay Thai, recognized the ATBAP-MTI as the official organization of Amateur Muay Thai in the Philippines. Since then, ATBAP-MTI has also been recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) as the nation's official organization for Amateur Muay Thai.

 

Competitions

ATBAP has already participated in a number of international competitions, namely: the 18th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand (Dec. 1995) as observer-participants, the 2nd King's Cup World Amateur Muay Thai Championships in Bangkok, Thailand (April 1997) as participants in the Referee & Judge Training Workshop, the 9th Prince Cup Asian Amateur Muay Thai Championships in Bangkok, Thailand (Nov. 1997) winning 2 bronze medals, the 3rd King's Cup World Amateur Muay Thai Championships in Bangkok, Thailand (Aug. 1998) as participants, the Asian Sports Festival in Shenyang, China (Aug.1998) winning 1 silver medal, and the 13th Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand (Dec. 1998) winning 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Likewise, the ATBAP has also organized various local competitions, such as: the 1st Geronimo Cup Amateur Muay Thai Competition (June 1996), the 2nd Geronimo Cup Amateur Muay Thai Competition (Mar. 1997), the Centennial Cup (March 1998) and most recently, the 5th National Amateur Muay Thai Championships (May 21-23, 1999).

Up-to-date, no other Amateur Muay Thai organization in the Philippines has accomplished what the ATBAP-MTI has done in terms of successful national tournaments held, and where international medals and recognition garnered are concerned.

ATBAP is officially recognized by the highest governing bodies of Muay Thai based internationally and in Thailand. ATBAP is the only Muay Thai organization in the Philippines recognized by the International Federation of Muay Thai Amateur (IFMA), the official international governing body of Amateur Muay Thai recognized by the Governement of Thailand. ATBAP is also recognized by the Sports Authority of Thailand, under the auspices of the Government of Thailand. ATBAP is also an official member of the Amateur Muay Thai Association of Thailand (AMAT) & the World Muay Thai Council (WMTC), the Southeast Asia Amateur Muay Thai Federation (SEA-AMF), and the Federation of Amateur Muay Thai of Asia (FAMA).
